Out of Patients EP455: SurgeON: Dr. Jeremy Heffner
WHAT HAPPENS WHEN THE SYSTEM YOU SERVED LEAVES YOU ON THE FLOOR
Dr. Jeremy Heffner spent 20 years on the front lines of trauma surgery. He ran a hospital's COVID response. He saved hundreds of lives. Then the system broke him.
When he needed residential therapy for PTSD, the insurance company said no. He paid out of pocket. The same system he gave everything to gave him nothing back.
This week on Out of Patients, Jeremy and I go deep on what nobody wants to say out loud.
Younger doctors aren't leaving medicine because they lack grit. They're leaving because they watched the generation before them get chewed up and spit out. They see the paperwork. They see insurers overruling clinical decisions. They see physicians carrying all the responsibility while losing all the authority.
They're not walking into medicine blind. They're walking away with their eyes wide open.
Jeremy also calls out the burnout industrial complex for what it is. Not wellness initiatives with free pizza in the break room. Actual psychological injury from years of absorbing trauma with zero training on how to process it.
At trauma conferences, they throw statistics on the board. 70% chance of addiction, divorce, collapse. Then nothing. No plan. No fix. Just more funding requests to study the problem longer.
The canary never exited the coal mine. The next generation noticed.
Welcome to 2026: The Year of the Patient where the sick shall inherit the ballot.
