Out of Patients EP437: AYA Family Affair: Jansher Naim

In February 2022, at 19, Jansher Naim went from random stomach pain to a Stage 4 fibrolamellar diagnosis most oncologists rarely see. By the time he landed in my studio in 2026, he had already lived through 41 rounds of chemo, a Whipple, and the kind of forced perspective shift that ages you fast.

He did not come alone. His mother, Sadia Siddiqui, sat right beside him in perfect mom fashion, the same woman who refused to accept “no cure” as the final word and rebuilt his care path when the system ran out of imagination.

I wanted this conversation because young adult cancer still leaves too many people isolated, misread, and pushed through pipelines built for someone else. Jansher talks about getting diagnosed at 18, fighting to keep pieces of normal life, and yes, negotiating cancer care around Tyler the Creator tickets. Dark humor stays intact.

What did I take away? Resilience rarely looks heroic in real time. It looks like showing up anyway.
